A sudden decision in 1864 for finally abolishing serfdom in Poland happened. The ensuing breakup of estates and destitution of many peasants convinced educated Poles to turn instead to the idea of "organic work", economic and cultural self-improvement. This probably affected Lithuania as well. The Goldfus family go back in Lithuania to Iones (Jonah) of about 1730. Before that It might have been Poland/Russia. The family could have lived through this breakup of Polish estates and destitution and had then moved to Lithuania. In 1868–1869, hundreds of Lithuanian Jews crossed into Russia to seek help from Jewish communities in East Prussia after a hunger crisis. The crisis was a turning point for Jewish community leaders in Central and Western Europe, who realized that Jewish migration would become a major issue.
Cause of death: An accident. He had a horse and wagon. The horse bolted, and he was killed.
War: July 1912: Balkan Wars, (1912–13), two successive military conflicts that deprived the Ottoman Empire of all its remaining territory in Europe except part of Thrace and the city of Adrianople (Edirne). The second conflict erupted when the Balkan allies Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria quarreled over the partitioning of their conquests. The result was a resumption of hostilities in 1913 between Bulgaria on the one hand and Serbia and Greece, which were joined by Romania, on the other. Though there were wars going on, none affected Nathan from leaving Lithuania.
However, shortly after Nathan's death, By late 1915 Lithuania had come under German military occupation. The goal of the German administration was to create a Lithuanian state that would be a satellite of Germany after the final peace treaty. It authorized a gathering in Vilnius, on Sept. 18–22, 1917, of a congress of 214 Lithuanian delegates. The gathering called for an independent Lithuanian state within ethnic frontiers with Vilnius as its capital, and it elected a 20-member Taryba, or council. On Feb. 16, 1918, the Taryba proclaimed an independent Lithuanian state.

DAVID GOLDFOOT
David Alan Goldfoot z”l passed away in Austin, Texas Oct. 8, 2023, at the age of 81. Born in Portland, Ore., on August 2, 1942, to Maurice and Mildred Goldfoot, David grew up with his older sister, Nadene, in a multicultural community. All who knew him described David as brilliant, kind, fun loving, creative, and a wonderful friend. At just ten years old he became the first Jewish child to be named Prime Minister of Portland’s Junior Rose Festival. In 2003, his lasting influence on his community was honored when he was knighted as Sir David Goldfoot of Rosaria. In 1964 he graduated from Reed College and married Heather Birnie, also from Portland. David later graduated from OHSU with a Ph.D. in Medical Psychology. He was a widely respected psychologist who specialized in working with individuals with anger problems and sexual addictions. David will be remembered by his loving wife, Lorraine Broll, sons Joel (Jill Jodar) and Josh (Matthew Berry), daughter, Michelle, sister, Nadene Goldfoot, and his beloved poodle, Roxy. He was a devoted father who taught his children to love learning and to treat all people equally. As a partner, he was beyond compare supportive, kind, patient, and thoughtful. There will be a celebration of David’s life later this fall in Austin. In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s memory may be made to Cancer Research Institute (www. cancerresearch.org).

Don's family of Eichmans came from Chelm, Poland. "The town was the capital of a historical region of the Land of Chelm, administratively a part of the Ruthenian Voivodeship in the Lesser Poland Province of the Polish Crown. The city prospered in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was then that The Golem of Chelm by Rabbi Elijah Ba'al Shem of Chelm became famous, but the city declined in the 17th century due to the wars which ravaged Poland. In the 18th century, the situation in eastern Poland stabilized and the town started to slowly recover from the damages suffered during the Swedish Deluge and the Khmelnytsky uprising. It attracted a number of new settlers from all parts of Poland, including people of Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish faiths. In 1794, the Chelm Voivodeship was established. Chelm was one of the first towns to join the Kosciuszko's Uprising later that year. In the Battle of Chelm of 8 June 1794, the forces of Gen. Józef Zajaczek were defeated by the Russians under Valerian Zubov and Boris Lacy, the town was yet again sacked by the invading armies. The following year, as a result of the Third Partition of Poland, the town was annexed by Austria. Lubin, Poland was also a city his Eichman ancestors lived in. The Lublin Ghetto was a World War II ghetto created by Nazi Germany in the city of Lublin on the territory of General Government in occupied Poland.[1] The ghetto inmates were mostly Polish Jews, although a number of Roma were also brought in.[2] Set up in March 1941, the Lublin Ghetto was one of the first Nazi-era ghettos slated for liquidation during the most deadly phase of the Holocaust in occupied Poland.[3] Between mid-March and mid-April 1942 over 30,000 Jews were delivered to their deaths in cattle trucks at the Belzec extermination camp and additional 4,000 at Majdanek.[1][4]
I have to include this one. I just found it. It's another Albert Eichman but with 2ns.
Albert Eichmann, age 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughter on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Froedtert Family Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc. He was born on April 20, 1936, in Poland to the late Wilhelm and Emilie (Tober) Eichmann. In 1955, Albert and his brothers immigrated to the United States, settling
in Sheboygan with their aunt and uncle, Augusta and Edward Lungwitz. Albert
proudly served in the United States Army from 1960 until 1966. He was stationed in
Germany where he was reunited with his childhood friend and future wife, Ingrid
Semrau. (So similar to Donnie whose first name was Albert like his father. )

Found: One of Our Goldfus- Goldfoots on Our Tree in Minnesota and Other Tidbits
Nadene Goldfoot
Our Goldfoot family came from the surname of Goldfus. It was anglicized in England, but originated in Lithuania, specifically in or near Telsiai,(Telz), Lithuania. Our grandfather, Nathan Abraham Goldfoot went to England and then to Dublin, Ireland, where he married a Lena Goldberg there on February 21, 1893, and divorced before coming to Portland, Oregon. Nathan died in an accident with his horse and wagon and died at the age of 37 years 11 months, 4 days on July 19, 1912. All his relatives came from Telsiai, Lithuania. I didn't find anyone else in Ukraine, Russia or any other place on Jewishgen.org. That means we were Litvaks, of which our Bubby was very proud. Bubby, Zlata Jermulowske, of Lazdijai, Lithuania-Poland.

As far as I know, none of these men were out in Portland at the time our Nathan Abraham was killed. When Bubbie was asked what Nathan's father's name was, I believe she was heard to say John in her Yiddish accented answer. I heard and said Bobby, not Bubbie. She was my Bobby.
That could not be the answer. I don't think she even understood the question as Charlie, her oldest, was only 6 and just beginning to learn English at school. Charlie's sister, Ann, was born after their father, Nathan Abraham Goldfoot was killed on July 19, 1912.
Ann was born on November 11, 1912, not quite 4 months later. Nathan had gone from being a peddler to an expressman. He was a furniture mover in Ireland. He was tall, supposedly like 6 feet tall. Bubbie had to stand on a chair to kiss him.
Jews began living in Lithuania as early as the 13th century. In 1388, they were granted a charter by Vytautas, under which they formed a class of freemen subject in all criminal cases directly to the jurisdiction of the grand duke and his official representatives, and in petty suits to the jurisdiction of local officials on an equal footing with the lesser nobles (szlachta), boyars, and other free citizens. As a result, the community prospered.
In 1495, they were expelled by Alexander Jagiellon, but allowed to return in 1503. The Lithuanian statute of 1566 placed a number of restrictions on the Jews, and imposed sumptuary laws, including the requirement that they wear distinctive clothing, including yellow caps for men and yellow kerchiefs for women.
The Khmelnytsky Uprising destroyed the existing Lithuanian Jewish institutions. Still, the Jewish population of Lithuania grew from an estimated 120,000 in 1569 to approximately 250,000 in 1792.
After the 1793 Second Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Lithuanian Jews became subjects of the Russian Empire. On the census they just said, RUSSIA.
After 1843, Telz was part of the Kovno Province (Gubernia).
The town of Telz was damaged during the Polish rebellions of 1831 and 1861. Nathan left in 1893. After he left, the town burned down in 1907. Nathan was only 4 years old when his father, Movshe, had passed away in 1878.
There were years of famine from 1869 to 1872.
In 1870 there were 6,481 Jewish residents in Telz including 4,399 Jews which is 68% of the poulation. By 1897 after Nathan left, there were 6,000 residents and of them 3,088 were Jews which was 51% Jewish.
The 1880s in Ukraine and other places were persecuted and there were pogroms, making Telz Jews most uncomfortable. They were already suffering from conscription into the army for a period of 6 years for all Jewish males. May young Jewish men left Telz and immigrated to America, Argentina and South Africa then. from 1870 to 1923, the Jewish populatio of Telz decreased by 2,854 people. There was a cholera epidemic of 1893 that took many victims, especially among the poor Jews, who lived in overcrowded and bad hygienic conditions.
Among the Jewish merchants there were several who had big business and were even allowed into Russia proper. Movshe was said to be a Distiller on the census of Lithuania.

Finally someone came and told her what had happened. She was so upset, that she cursed the bearer of the news, a Jewish friend who had found out but hadn't told her due to it being the Sabbath. The friend died several years later, the cause said to be her curse.

Morris then married my mother, Mildred. She was going to beauty school while living and caring for the children of the Gurion family in South Portland. She'd walk past the Kosher butcher shop where he worked, and he whistled as she was very pretty with long "Betty Grable" legs. He'd been previously married for a short while which hadn't worked out, so she was warned about him, but liked what she saw anyway.
Being a butcher led to Maurice, as my mom had changed his name, to start up his own wholesale meat packing business with LINCOLN WHOLESALE MEATS. He even had his own slaughter-house on Beaverton-Hillsdale highway towards Beaverton, Oregon. He had my cousins Don and Nate working for him when they weren't in school. Later, when I was 15, I worked for my dad as his bookkeeper. He trained me on the job. I was a junior in high school then. When I was 16 I drove myself to work after school.

Dad became very ill while working in Ontario and had to be flown in a small airplane to Portland. Mom was with him. He died within 3 weeks at the age of 59 years and 22 days on 23 July 1967.
I found out that being a meat packer is one of the most stressful jobs of all.
